What is Nyaope?
Nyaope or Whoonga or Wunga is a cheap and widely available street drug. Made primarily from heroin, Nyaope contains many other ingredients that are not meant for human consumption unlike those available from your doctor or pharmacist. The ingredients differ from supplier to supplier and can include everything from rat poison to cleaning detergents to methamphetamines – it really just comes down to cost and availability. Injecting or smoking Nyaope generates intense feelings of euphoria, deep contentment and relaxation for between two and four hours. But these short lived highs are followed by nasty lows. Anxiety, depression, nausea, diarrhea and extreme cramps. In more serious cases Nyaope usage can lead to internal bleeding, stomach ulcers and even death.
“Kicking the Habit”
Nyaope addiction is particularly harmful causing significant changes to the chemistry of the brain. It's addictive both physically and mentally with intense cravings resulting in high relapse rates. To recover fully from Nyaope requires strong motivation and the desire to learn those new skills that are needed to overcome the addiction. This includes the willingness to accept the help of others including health professionals, family and the local community.
